    Let our local guides introduce you to the rich culture and vibrant history of Vietnam. Your adventure starts in Hanoi, a French colonial city with many well-preserved buildings and tranquil lakes.

    Escaping the bustling capital, we drive east to reach the UNESCO World Heritage site, Halong Bay. After a day on the bay, we then move to Central Vietnam and explore Hue Imperial city, home of the last emperor of Vietnam. From there we head to Hoi An, also a notorious UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continuing south, we finish in the metropolitan Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon) and visit the famous Cu Chi Tunnels.

    This trip is a great introduction to Vietnam and we are more than happy to tweak it in order to add to a larger itinerary.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Hanoi (-/-/D)

    Hanoi - Airport: 30km, ~40min drive

    Upon arrival at the Noi Bai airport, you will be greeted by your local guide who will escort you to your hotel located in the heart of Hanoi. After some time to rejuvenate and eat lunch, our guide will be back to accompany you in the late afternoon.

    Your first stop is attending a traditional Vietnamese art known as a Water Puppet Show. After the show we will end the day with dinner at a local restaurant where you will sample some of Hanoi’s finest cuisine.

    Day 2: Hanoi City - Halong (B/L/-)

    Hanoi - Halong: 170km, ~3h30min drive

    After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a half-day city tour. Starting at the Ho Chi Minh Complex, your guide will show you the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (closed on Monday, Friday & November), the Presidential Palace, Ho Chi Minh’s Stilt House, and the One Pillar Pagoda, whose origins date back to the foundation of city. Our next destination is the Temple of Literature, constructed in 1070 to worship Confucius; it was Vietnam’s first university. Housed here are 82 stone steles perched on stone tortoises that honor the 1307 Vietnamese scholars that passed prestigious royal exams between 1442 and 1779.

    After lunch at a local restaurant, we depart for Halong city. Traveling by car, we pass through the endless rice fields and winding rivers of Red River Delta. After checking into your hotel in Halong city, you are free to explore or relax on your own.

    Day 3: Halong Bay - Flight to Hue (B/L/-)

    Halong Bay - Noi Bai Airport: 160km, ~3h40min drive
    Hanoi - Hue: 770km, 1h flight

    Following breakfast at the hotel, our guide will accompany you on a private five hour cruise in Halong Bay during which you will visit numerous islands and caves as well as enjoy the surreal beauty of the limestone cliffs rising from the emerald water.  Aboard the cruise a delicious seafood lunch will be served. After we disembark our driver will pick you up at the pier and drive you to the Hanoi airport for the flight to Hue. Upon arrival, another driver will meet and transfer you to hotel for check-in.

    Day 4: Hue Imperial City - Hoi An (B/L/-)

    Hue - Hoi An: 140km, ~2h30m drive

    After breakfast at the hotel, we will travel by boat up the Perfume River to reach the picturesque Thien Mu pagoda. Built in 1601, this pagoda is one of the oldest and enchanting religious buildings in the country. Among many interesting artifacts displayed here, is the car which the former monk Thich Quang Duc took to Saigon before burning himself in protest of the South Vietnamese Regime and its treatment of Buddhists. Following our boat tour we will visit the elaborate mausoleum of former emperor Tu Duc, an impressive 12ha compound, which was built between 1864 and 1867 by 3000 soldiers and workers. We then stop to discover the secrets of making conical hats and incense sticks.

    In the afternoon, we visit the Hue Imperial City. This complex of buildings served as the home of Vietnam’s last Imperial Family, the Nguyen dynasty, from 1802 to 1945. After that, we bid Hue farewell and continue our south bound journey to the old trading town of Hoi An. Upon arrival, and check-in to the the afternoon is then free for your personal discovery.

    Day 5: Hoi An - Danang - Flight to Saigon (B/L/-)

    Danang - Saigon : ~850km, 2h flight

    Following breakfast at hotel, we will spend the morning visiting Hoi An and its unique blend of Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese influences. We will visit historic Japanese merchant houses, the 400-year-old Japanese Covered Bridge, as well as the colorful riverside market, and the workshops where Hoi An’s famous lanterns are made. These craftsmen/artisans will share their skills with you as you make your own lantern.

    Leaving Hoi An, we transfer to Danang airport for the flight to Saigon. Upon arrival in Saigon, our guide and driver will meet you at the airport and escort you to your hotel in city center. After checking in at the hotel, our guide will lead on a tour of the bustling city center with a visit to the Reunification PalaceNotre Dame Cathedral, the Saigon Post OfficeThien Hau Temple, and the Ben Thanh market.

    Day 6: Saigon - Cu Chi Tunnels - Departure (B/-/-)

    Saigon - Cu Chi: 60km, ~1h20m drive

    After breakfast at hotel, our guide and driver pick will you up and you will head to Cu Chi Tunnels, located 70km from Ho Chi Minh City. The tunnel system, built over a period of 25 years starting in the 1940s, and played an important role in the Vietnam War as a base for the Viet Cong.

    That’s all folks! We will then escort you to the Tan Son Nhat airport for your flight to your next destination whether that be home or onwards.

    This trip is private and therefore can be altered to suit your needs, date of commencement and budget requirements.

    Prices vary due to a number of specifics:

    • Seasonal: during high season (October-April), the prices of services are generally higher when compared to the low season (May-September).
    • The number of participants: the more of you that travel together the less you will pay!
    • The choice of hotels: Fairly obvious one here; a 5-star hotel can cost ten times as much as a 2 star hotel.
    • The activities during the trip: Two trips on the same itinerary and of the same length can have two different prices depending on the number and nature of activities included.
    • The booking date: In some cases, booking your trip late can drastically affect prices due to their low availability.

    Accommodation

    • Accommodation is an important expenditure of your trip. When you choose a luxury trip for example, the accommodation can represent three quarters of the price. Thus, your choice of hotels is closely related to your budget.
    • Tonkin-Travel has negotiated rates with a wide range of hotels from 2 to 5 stars.
    • In some places you will have the option to choose ‘home-stay’. Although this provides less comfort that a hotel it is a truly authentic experience and highly recommended for at least one night of your journey.

    All transfers during your trip are covered by private vehicle with driver, unless otherwise indicated in our offer. We ensure that our vehicles are new and comfortable. Fuel, tolls, accommodation, compensation and the driver are included in our offer. Only gratuities are not included and are at your discretion.

    Domestic flights

    If your trip includes domestic flights if any, they will be operated by Vietnam Airlines, the largest airline in Vietnam. The fleet consists mainly of Airbus and Boeing. On some short trips, the company operates 72 ATR and some Fokker.

    Rail transport

    Train travel can be offered (particularly between Hanoi-Lao Cai and Hanoi-Hue). Travelling at a speed of 60km/h on average it is not necessarily the fastest but an interesting experience nonetheless.
