  • Day 1: Yangon - Flight to Mandalay (-/L/D)

    Yangon - Mandalay: 630km, 1h46min flight

    Morning domestic flight from Yangon to Mandalay. On arrival transfer to the Road To Mandalay berthed on the Ayeyarwady River at Shwe Kyet Yet. After lunch, disembark for an excursion to Mandalay, visiting historic sites and learning about traditional Burmese arts.

    Toast the sunset with a champagne cocktail at the U Bein Bridge. Dine on a selection of Asian and Western dishes in the elegant Restaurant.

    Day 2: Mandalay - Bagan (B/L/D)

    Combine an early yoga session with a refreshing drink from the Healthy Juice Bar for a revitalising start to the day. Participate in an early almsgiving ceremony at a small pagoda before experiencing the bustle of the village near our jetty. The ship then sails to Ava, where you alight for a tour of the ancient capital. Choose to explore by horse and cart. Alternatively opt for a guided or independent bike ride. Spend the afternoon sailing to Bagan and enjoy a range of onboard activities. These include a lecture on Myanmar culture, a demonstration of how to tie a longyi, and a fortune-telling session with an astrologer.

    Day 3: Bagan (B/L/D)

    Relax at an early meditation session in the Observation Lounge. Today is spent in Bagan, where over 3,000 ancient temples and pagodas cover the sun-baked plains beside the Ayeyarwady River. The morning excursion allows guests to select from a variety of tour options. “Introduction to Bagan” examines the temples and history. “A Day in the Life” explore local culture, food and markets. “Bagan by Bicycle” is perfect for those seeking a little more action, and can be conducted with a guide or on your own. Before lunch stroll through the small village that is home to Belmond’s private jetty near Old Bagan. Visit the Belmond Free Clinic where our onboard doctor is busy treating patients. This afternoon visit Ananda, one of Bagan’s most magnificent temples, then explore a rarely visited pagoda by torchlight. End the day watching the sun set over the plains. Dine under the stars on the Observation Deck at our Road to Mandalay Grill. A traditional marionette performance rounds off this memorable day.

    Day 4: Bagan - Mount Popa (B/L/D)

    Experience one of the highlights of Bagan - a hot-air balloon flight over the pagodas at sunrise. This exceptional experience is available at an additional supplement. Embark on a full-day excursion to Mt.Popa, around two hours outside of Bagan. This sacred mountain is considered home to the 37 Nat spirits. Stop at a toddy palm plantation along the way, discovering how they produce sweet jaggery and a potent alcoholic spirit. Climb the 777 steps to the top of Mt.Popa, or spend some time exploring the village below. Lunch is served at a nearby resort which boasts exceptional vistas of the surrounding area. Return to the ship in the late afternoon for some time at leisure. You may wish to have a walk through the charming little village located near our jetty.

    Day 5: Bagan - Mandalay (B/L/D)

    Start the day with the morning adventure of your choice. Explore the temples of Old Bagan by bike or horse-and-cart, take a sunrise temple tour or visit a village community project. Alternatively set off on a spellbinding hot-air balloon ride, available at an additional supplement. A range of onboard activities are available as the ship sails towards Mandalay, whether listening to a cultural lecture or indulging in the spa. Relax by the pool on the Observation Deck or work out in the gym. Sample local infusions and delicacies in our Burmese Tea Shop, and learn how to dress in a traditional Myanmar sarong. This evening a gourmet dinner is served on board.

    Day 6: Mandalay - Mingun (B/L/D)

    During the morning’s sailing take part in a range of activities, such as a sunrise yoga session, a meditation class or a Myanmar cookery demonstration. Enjoy a presentation by our onboard doctor as he discusses his local community projects. Arrive in Mingun and choose from two fascinating tours. Discover the nearby historical sites with our guide or join a walk through a rural village, engaging with the locals. In the evening you are invited to wear a traditional sarong to our vibrant Longyi Cocktail Party on the Observation Deck.

    Day 7: Sagaing - Maymyo (B/L/D)

    Spend the day on an excursion into the mountains and the former colonial hill station of Maymyo (Pyin Oo Lwin). Board a traditional horse and carriage for a ride around the town. Look out for the striking colonial architecture visible in many of the country cottage homes. Visit the vibrant local markets and enjoy a stroll through the National Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens. Return to the ship berthed at Shwe Kyet Yet for an evening at leisure. Enjoy traditional entertainment after your spectacular farewell dinner.

    This trip is private and therefore can be altered to suit your needs, date of commencement and budget requirements.

    Prices vary due to a number of specifics:

    • Seasonal: during high season (October-April), the prices of services are generally higher when compared to the low season (May-September).
    • The number of participants: the more of you that travel together the less you will pay!
    • The choice of hotels: Fairly obvious one here; a 5-star hotel can cost ten times as much as a 2 star hotel.
    • The activities during the trip: Two trips on the same itinerary and of the same length can have two different prices depending on the number and nature of activities included.
    • The booking date: In some cases, booking your trip late can drastically affect prices due to their low availability.

    Accommodation

    • In some places you will have the option to choose ‘home-stay’. Although this provides less comfort that a hotel it is a truly authentic experience and highly recommended for at least one night of your journey.

    All transfers during your trip are covered by private vehicle with driver, unless otherwise indicated in our offer. We ensure that our vehicles are new and comfortable. Fuel, tolls, accommodation, compensation and the driver are included in our offer. Only gratuities are not included and are at your discretion.

    Domestic flights

    If your trip includes domestic flights if any, they will be operated by Vietnam Airlines, the largest airline in Vietnam. The fleet consists mainly of Airbus and Boeing. On some short trips, the company operates 72 ATR and some Fokker.

    Rail transport

    Train travel can be offered (particularly between Hanoi-Lao Cai and Hanoi-Hue). Travelling at a speed of 60km/h on average it is not necessarily the fastest but an interesting experience nonetheless.
